The magic numbers

Certainly in more than one occasion you’ve had need to rebuild your Internet connection and you have had to struggle with lots of numbers and strange concepts: DNS, network mask, ip, gateway … however, are the concepts of network under TCP / IP more essential. On this page you’ll see its meaning.

IP Address

The number IP is the logical address that identifies your computer on a network (either local or external). This direction is one for each team in the world, or only within each local network, and the call because only logical direction to know the IP, any router is capable of directing data to the target machine (or another router that is probably capable of sending data to the target computer.

If your computer does not connect directly to internet, no need to have a unique IP number worldwide, but only at the level of the subnet that is integrated. So, if you have a home network with three teams, you only need one public IP (only) for the computer that connects to the Internet, having private IP subnet level for each computer or device (private IPs that are unique to each subnet) . For example a private IP address of a class C network would be 192.168.0.1 for the internet gateway, 192.168.0.2 for the following machine, etc. Read the rest of this entry »

Route summarization or aggregation,  is a mechanism used to design networks that are more flexible and perform better. With route summarization  or aggregation, in a hierarchical routing infrastructure, one route in a routing table represents many routes.

Although some routing protocols summarize only at the boundaries of major network numbers, others support route summarization (aggregation) at any bit boundary. Variable-length subnet masks enable routing protocols to summarize on bit boundaries.

A network protocol is a standard set of rules standard-standard, which specifies the method to send and receive data between multiple computers.

No single network protocol, and may coexist on the same computer multiple protocols installed, it is possible that a computer belonging to different networks.

This variety of protocols can be a security risk: each network protocol installed on a Windows system is available for all network adapters in the system, physical (network card or modem) or software (VPN adapters). If network devices or protocols are not properly configured, we can be giving unwanted access to our resources.

The simplest safety rule is to have installed the necessary number of protocols, both now and in most cases should suffice to only TCP / IP. Read the rest of this entry »

Building Scalable Cisco Inernet Work (BSCI)

By Diane Teare, Catherine Paquet.

Published by Cisco Press.

Series: Self-Study Guide.

Description:Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (BSCI) , Third Edition is a    Cisco authorized, self-paced learning tool for CCNP preparation. This book teaches readers to design, configure, maintain, and scale routed networks. The book covers routing principles of both distance vector and link-state routing protocolsIP addressing techniques; the theory behind the IGP and EGP routing protocols;configuration and troubleshooting information for each protocol.
The book provides early and comprehensive foundation learning for the CCNP BSCI exam. Important routing topics, including advanced IP addressing, routing principles, manipulating routing updates, and EIGRP, OSPF, IS-IS, and BGP configuration.
Chapters open with a list of objectives to focus the reader’s study. Configuration exercises at the end of each chapter and a master lab exercise that ties all the topics together in the last chapter help illuminate theoretical concepts. Key terms are highlighted and defined, and each chapter concludes with a summary to help review key concepts.
